The operative question here may not be which one to have. I say both….can you have too many? Well, yes — probably…more periodic maintenance, etc. But seriously, if you really are a one-a-day cigar smoker, there are even more questions than this to consider, so let’s answer these one at a time.
Do you smoke the same place every day? If so, easy answer: Desktop, unless of course you make a daily trip to the cigar lounge to buy the single cigar you’ll be smoking. And if you’re doing that, I would guess you probably stay there to smoke it, in which case, your humidor is the one that’s a walk-in size, fully stocked and carefully maintained by the cigar lounge. Therefore, you’re hereby exempt from the rest of this interrogation.
For the rest of us, there are still more follow-up questions… is that same daily place at your home or somewhere else? If the answer is home, a desktop is probably sufficient. If you smoke anywhere else, the answer is another set of questions. Will you be alone or with others? If you’ll be with others, how many others will there be? Will they be smoking as well? Will they bring cigars or will they be pleasantly surprised that you brought one for them, too? Will you be indoors or outdoors? How will you be dressed? How many cigars do you need to bring to have enough to share? How many choices do you want to have for yourself? How many choices will you want to offer others?
If the above doesn’t provide the answer you’re hoping to find, here it is: you need a travel humidor. You want to keep your cigars safe, fresh and WITH you. Whether you’ll be dressed for success, decked out for golf, fishing or anything outdoors, or just cool and comfy for hanging with friends, you can either choose a travel humidor that works for all of the above - or one for each. I vote for the latter. :)
Or wait, there's one more option: get a travel humidor that's both large enough to hold all you buy every time you restock AND portable enough to take with you everywhere you go to enjoy them.
